Herra forseti Íslands, virðulega forsetafrú, sýslumaður Árnessýslu og aðrir gestir.

Ég þakka hlýleg orð í minn garð, mér er það gleðiefni að lifa þá stund að sjá málverkagjöf mína og sona minna skreyta veggi í þessu nýja safnhúsi Árnessýslu. Ég tel það mikilsvert fyrir menningu þjóðarinnar að listasöfn séu staðsett sem víðast og það er von mín að íbúum þessa fagra héraðs verði það menningarauki að eignast þetta málverkasafn sem er hið fyrsta staðsett utan höfuðborgarinnar. Ég treysti því að sú ósk mín verði jafnan virt að vel sé að málverkasafninu búið að það verði ætíð ein heild og opið almenningi til sýnis eftir því sem henta þykir og að sjálfsögðu er sú ósk rík í huga mér að uppvaxandi æskufólki verði vísuð leiðin í þessa menningarmiðstöð sýslunnar. Að svo mæltu bið ég þessu veglega safnhúsi Árnessýslu blessunar og vona að allt það sem húsin geymir megi efla átthagatryggð og sanna menningu.

Mr President, esteemed First Lady, District Commissioner of Árnessýsla county and other guests:

I am grateful for the warm words spoken of me, and it is a delight for me to experience this moment of seeing the gift of art donated by me and my sons adorning the walls in this new museum building for Árnessýsla county. I feel it is of great value for the culture of the nation that art museums should be located as widely as possible, and it is my hope that it will be an addition to the culture of the residents of this beautiful region to acquire this collection of paintings, which is the first located outside the capital area. I trust that my request will be respected, that the collection of paintings will be well cared-for, that it will form one entity and be open to the public as deemed appropriate, and of course I fervently hope that young people growing up will be guided into this cultural centre for the county. With these words I pray for blessings on this fine museum building for Árnessýsla, and I hope that all that is kept in this building may promote loyalty to our home region, and true culture.
