What happens when a magazine becomes a treasure map for creativity?
At the beginning of the workshop, each child receives a mysterious envelope containing a specially designed Exploration Kit – an activity magazine, notebook and creative materials made especially for the workshop.
The magazine becomes our creative treasure map as we work our way through playful prompts, activities and challenges together. Children will draw, write, cut, collect and collage, using elements from the magazine to gradually transform the blank pages of their notebook into a personal scrapbook of ideas, discoveries and memories from the day.
At the end of the workshop, children take both their notebook and activity magazine home. The magazine includes additional activities, creative challenges and prompts that can be explored later or shared with family – allowing the creative adventure to continue beyond the workshop.
No previous art experience is needed – just curiosity, imagination and a willingness to explore!

There are moments when it feels good to sit down at a table, pick up a carving tool, and let an image slowly emerge thanks to its blade.
During the linocut workshop, we invite you into a world of simple gestures, concentration, and small discoveries. We will draw, carve, and print our own designs, perhaps inspired by works from Gallery Arsenal’s Collection II presented in the exhibition, a memory, a favourite place, a plant found along the way, or something that has been lingering at the back of your mind for a long time.
There is something magical about linocut. At first, there is only a piece of lino and an uncertain line. Then comes the paper, the pressure of your hand… and suddenly, a trace remains. Something you can take with you and keep for a long time. And each successive print is slightly different.
You don’t need experience or drawing skills; curiosity and a little patience is all that is required. What matters most is the process and the time we spend together.
During the workshop we will focus on creative work, but we will also remember to pause for a moment to notice the smell of ink, the sound of the carving tool, conversations around a shared table, and that quiet joy when you lift the paper for the first time and see your own image emerge on it.
Come and make something with your hands.
Stay for a while.
And perhaps go home with a small piece of memory on paper.
For children, we will prepare a simplified version of relief printing.

Są takie chwile, kiedy dobrze jest usiąść przy stole, wziąć do ręki dłuto i pozwolić, żeby spod jego ostrza powoli wyłonił się obraz.
Podczas warsztatów linorytu zapraszamy Cię do świata prostych gestów, skupienia i małych odkryć. Będziemy rysować, wycinać i odbijać własne wzory — może inspirowane pracą z Kolekcji II prezentowaną na wystawie, wspomnieniem, ulubionym miejscem, rośliną znalezioną po drodze albo czymś, co od dawna mieszka gdzieś z tyłu głowy.
Linoryt ma w sobie coś z magii. Najpierw jest tylko kawałek płytki i niepewna kreska. Potem pojawia się papier, nacisk dłoni… i nagle zostaje ślad. Coś, co można zabrać ze sobą i zachować na dłużej.
Nie trzeba mieć doświadczenia ani umiejętności rysowania. Wystarczy ciekawość i odrobina cierpliwości. Najważniejszy będzie proces i czas spędzony razem.
To będą warsztaty o tworzeniu, ale też o zatrzymaniu się na moment — o zapachu farby, skrzypieniu dłuta, rozmowach przy wspólnym stole i tej cichej radości, kiedy po raz pierwszy podnosisz papier i widzisz swój własny odbity obraz.
Przyjdź zrobić coś rękami.
Zostać na chwilę.
I może wrócić do domu z małym kawałkiem wspomnienia na papierze.
Dla małych dzieci przygotujemy uproszczoną wersję druku wypukłego.
Warsztaty są bezpłatne, ale obowiązuje opłata za materiały w wysokości 3 000 ISK.

Mindful workshop POL IS ART III
Mindful workshops with dry Brush, black paint and fineliner

In the workshop, we will focus exclusively on black and white. We will try out the dry brush technique to create graphic compositions with paint, and then fill the spaces between them using fine-tipped markers and pens. A calm, meditative process awaits us; everyone will leave with their own artwork – and, I hope, a sense of inner peace!

Na warsztatach skupimy się tylko na czerni i bieli. Spróbujemy techniki suchego pędzla, farbą stworzymy graficzne kompozycje, a potem cienkimi mazakami i długopisami wypełnimy przestrzenie między nimi. Czeka nas spokojny, medytacyjny proces, a każdy wyjdzie z niego ze swoim obrazkiem i mam nadzieję, spokojem w głowie!

WE CALL IT HOME – Painting on textiles workshop

An art workshop exploring identity, memory and the place we call home.
The workshop begins with a reflection on what makes a place feel like home. Participants choose three things they associate with home or with a place they feel connected to, then transform them into simple shapes, colours and patterns. These motifs are transferred onto fabric.
Each participant must bring one clean cotton item, such as a T-shirt, sweatshirt, shirt, tote bag or other textile item, to customise during the workshop. A white or light-coloured item is recommended. The museum and the workshop facilitator will not provide garments or other textile items for painting.

Warsztaty artystyczne poświęcone tożsamości, pamięci i miejscu, które nazywamy domem.
Punktem wyjścia będzie refleksja nad miejscem, które nazywamy domem. Uczestnicy wybiorą trzy rzeczy kojarzące im się z domem lub miejscem, z którym czują więź, a następnie przekształcą je w proste formy, kolory i wzory. Powstałe motywy przeniosą na przyniesioną przez siebie tkaninę, tworząc osobisty, noszony obraz. Każdy uczestnik musi przynieść jedną czystą bawełnianą rzecz, np. T-shirt, bluzę, koszulę, torbę lub inny tekstylny przedmiot, który chce spersonalizować. Najlepiej sprawdzi się biały lub jasny materiał. Muzeum ani prowadząca nie zapewniają ubrań ani innych materiałów tekstylnych do malowania.

Christmas sweater workshop

A family-friendly workshop where sweaters get a brand-new Christmas-themed look for December!
The workshop is based on the creative clothing repair sessions developed by textile designer Ýrúrarí, where garments gain new life and style through simple and accessible techniques.
Participants are invited to bring their own sweater or knitted garment to transform. If you have any particularly festive ideas—such as using small Christmas lights or an old Christmas decoration from storage—feel free to bring those along too!
A variety of materials and tools will be available to work with, suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced makers. There will also be materials and options for those who wish to participate without bringing a sweater, as there are plenty of ways to make temporary decorations just for the holiday season.
Children under 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult.
Ýrúrarí’s creative clothing repair workshops have traveled widely, taking place at venues such as Tivoli in Copenhagen, the Textile Arts Center in New York, Helsinki Fashion Week, and the MAK Museum in Vienna. Participants are also welcome to work on non-Christmas-themed repairs that can be enjoyed year-round—the same playful techniques apply in this Christmas edition of the workshop.
The workshop was developed by textile designer Ýr Jóhannsdóttir (Ýrúrarí) at the Museum of Design and Applied Art as part of her final project in the Art Education Department at the Iceland University of the Arts, with the aim of creating an accessible and creative space for clothing repair where imagination and flow lead the process.
Ýrúrarí is known for her upcycling projects that transform unsellable used sweaters into unique pieces full of character and humor through a wide range of textile techniques.

Papier-Mâché workshop

Papier-Mâché Workshop
In this workshop, we will learn how to make papier-mâché using old newspapers, magazines, and booklets. This technique is perfect for creating both small and large sculptures and requires very few materials.
We will explore two different papier-mâché techniques during the workshop, giving you the opportunity to discover which one you prefer!
The goal of the workshop is to create a small bird figurine inspired by the sculptures of Halldór Einarsson, as well as by works featured in the museum’s new exhibition—and, of course, by the many birds found in Iceland.
The workshop is open to everyone but we expect children under 8 to be with a grown up and will be held in English. Free for all and registration fraedsla@listasafnarnesinga.is
Book making workshop

Welcome to a book making workshop in the Museum’s Café, Friday 14 of August to celebrate the Blooming Days in Hveragerdi.
We will learn to make a simple book with all kinds of paper. You can bring your own if you want but there will be plenty available. You´ll be able to draw and write your own story or create your personal sketchbook.
The Museum’s wonderful intern, Laurine, will lead the workshop. She speaks English and French.
You can drop in anytime between 2 and 4 p.m., registration is not required.
The workshop is free of charge.
