Kintsugi Ceramics (repair) workshop.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with for example bronze and silver. The workshop is led by Clementine Nuttall who lives in Japan and has been exploring the Kintsugi method for a while. Clementine will introduce participants to the Kintsugi method and provide participants with an opportunity to bring their broken or chipped ceramics and learn the Japanese technique of Kintsugi. This collaborative experience aims to foster a sense of connection between the community and the artistic exploration, creating a shared narrative.
The repaired ceramics from the community symbolize the collective resilience and beauty that can emerge from life’s fractures.
Clementine Nuttall is a British artist that resides in Japan. She will be in residency in Hveragerði in July working on her project titled Faultlines that seeks to explore the intersection between the Japanese art of mending ceramics with gold, known as kintsugi, and the dynamic geological landscape of Iceland. Much like her adopted home in Japan, Iceland is situated in an area of significant seismic activity that outsider perspectives perceive as encapsulating both risk and beauty.
The residency location at Hveragerði is situated on the tectonic plate lines between the North American and Eurasian plates — a transitional space. The project aims to draw parallels between the lines of kintsugi and the lines of tectonic plates, highlighting the connection between the process of damage and the beauty of the golden repair, and the flourishing nature that bursts from the region in Summertime. In essence, ‘Faultlines’ will serve as a celebration and meditation on spirituality and human connections to nature, focusing on Icelandic hot spring culture as a distinctive expression of life lived in the faultlines.
The workshop is for free and is for ages 13+.
Registration is necessary: fraedsla(at)listasafnarnesinga.is
The workshop is sponsored by Hveragerði

Mineral is alive: stop-motion workshop.
September 15th 2024
14:00
The earliest forms of life have probably germinated at the foot of volcanoes, triggered by a correlation of water and basaltic rock.
The interaction gave birth to cellular organisms who slowly developed into plantae, animalia, fungi and bacteria.
During two hours, you will let your fantasy grow by creating a scenario of this miraculous chemical alchemy leading to the existence of different forms of life on earth.
With the help of Thomasine Giesecke, artist and Pascale Chau Huu, videast, the children will draw, cut and animate their figures to create a whimsical film which will be astonishing, for sure !!
Thomasine Giesecke is an artist living in Paris. She also works as an educational teacher at the Musée D´Orsay and the Louvre Museum. She has come to Iceland two years in a row and taught students in Árnes County and here in the museum, for example stop-motion and now she is back and this time she is also showing her works Volvox and Mineral is alive which she made in collaboration with other artists and scientists.

Patrick Bergeron
September 17th 2024
17:00
In connection with the presentation of his artwork Acoustic Shadows in the Organic Circuits group exhibit, the LÁ Art Museum presents a talk by artist Patrick Bergeron on Tuesday, September 17 at 5:00 p.m.
Patrick Bergeron (1967, Quebec, Canada) graduates as engineer and then moved towards creation after working for the National Film Board of Canada. Since then, he shares his artistic career with his work in the digital visual effects industry. In this field, he has participated in projects like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix. His art installations and experimental videos have been presented internationally in galleries and film festivals (South by Southwest, ARS Electronica, …). In his artworks, he elaborates and studies the concepts of time, memory and movement. He is interested in the vegetal world, its cycles and the natural forces that interact with it.
Patrick will discuss the paths which lead him to the creation of Acoustic Shadows. He will talk about being an engineer going into the digital visual effects industry and diverting his technical knowledge into creating arts. He will show images and videos from his early works and talk about the tools and techniques he has developed over the years.
Acoustic Shadows is an audio/video poem composed by the movement of the wind. It’s a generative video created with data extraction from analog sources. With visual examples, he will explain the way he uses the optical flow algorithm and the sound spectrograms to create an artwork which result in a sound and an image linked into metamorphosis.
