Upheaval in Iceland before and after 1970

27. september – 14. desember 2014

Upheaval is a collaborative exhibition with the National Gallery of Iceland, the third and last of a series of exhibitions designed to provide insight into specific periods and prevailing trends in Icelandic Art. Alongside the displays, gallery visitors and school groups are offered lively activities to learn about them and to have fun.

Upheaval covers the period in and after 1970, which was characterised by the turmoil of changing currents as powerful young artists began to work with new challenges and media. The exhibition includes works by Erró, Dieter Roth, Rúrí, Hildur Hákonardóttir and 50 other artists who have worked in sculpture, painting, graphics, textiles, installations, photography, video, and artbooks using a variety of media. All the works come from the collections of the National Gallery of Iceland, except two pieces loaned by the artist. The exhibition also navigates through much newspaper coverage bringing the spirit of the era.
