Scalpel cutout workshop.
9th of November 2024
14:00
Who is the workshop for?
For each and every one of you, over 14 years of age (because we will use sharp tools), who would like to try their skills in cutout with a scalpel and create your own cutout image. We work for about 3 hours. The first stage will be to create a silhouette of the selected plant using photo prints and tracing paper, the next – filling the image with layers of colored papers. You will learn how to create your own cutout images cut with a scalpel. I will tell you a few words about the history of paper cutting in Poland and my own path towards it. You will return home with a painting you have made yourself.
About the author of the workshop:
The scalpel cutout workshop will be led by Agnieszka Waszczeniuk – a graduate of the University of Arts in Poznań in Poland at the Faculty of Animation. Director of animated films, visual artist, screenwriter, animator, with extensive artistic achievements, appreciated and awarded many times both in Poland and abroad. Skalpelove cutouts are the artist’s original project, which – as she says – are her breath, joy, meditation, sense of fulfillment and pure beauty that she wants to share.

Creating with curiosity with Ronald Heu.
September 27th 2024
15:00
A workshop about how we can experiment and create music without getting stuck in restricting thoughts about the end product.
Do we really need to know exactly what we are doing in order for it to be something of value?
In this workshop we will discuss and explore how experimentation, coincidence and randomness can have value in music making.
We will also try to explore how non-musical elements from our environment could become an important part of our music.
You don’t necessarily need to know how to play an instrument in order to enjoy and explore music (or this workshop).
Ronald Heu grew up in the south of Sweden. During his early teens he played in a variety of punk and alternative bands. After high school he studied classical guitar at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff where he graduated in 2002. With one foot in punk and its DIY approach and the other in classical music, he started composing and in 2016 he completed his first film score. The film music became a framework where he could make use of his seemingly contradictory musical background and desire for experimentation.
In 2018 he wrote the music for the multiple award winning Jordanian documentary film Tiny Souls by Dina Naser, which since its premiere in 2019 has been screened worldwide.

Patrick Bergeron
September 17th 2024
16:00
In connection with the presentation of his artwork Acoustic Shadows in the Organic Circuits group exhibit, the LÁ Art Museum presents a talk by artist Patrick Bergeron on Tuesday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m.
Patrick Bergeron (1967, Quebec, Canada) graduates as engineer and then moved towards creation after working for the National Film Board of Canada. Since then, he shares his artistic career with his work in the digital visual effects industry. In this field, he has participated in projects like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix. His art installations and experimental videos have been presented internationally in galleries and film festivals (South by Southwest, ARS Electronica, …). In his artworks, he elaborates and studies the concepts of time, memory and movement. He is interested in the vegetal world, its cycles and the natural forces that interact with it.
Patrick will discuss the paths which lead him to the creation of Acoustic Shadows. He will talk about being an engineer going into the digital visual effects industry and diverting his technical knowledge into creating arts. He will show images and videos from his early works and talk about the tools and techniques he has developed over the years.
Acoustic Shadows is an audio/video poem composed by the movement of the wind. It’s a generative video created with data extraction from analog sources. With visual examples, he will explain the way he uses the optical flow algorithm and the sound spectrograms to create an artwork which result in a sound and an image linked into metamorphosis.

Mineral is alive: stop-motion workshop.
September 15th 2024
14:00
The earliest forms of life have probably germinated at the foot of volcanoes, triggered by a correlation of water and basaltic rock.
The interaction gave birth to cellular organisms who slowly developed into plantae, animalia, fungi and bacteria.
During two hours, you will let your fantasy grow by creating a scenario of this miraculous chemical alchemy leading to the existence of different forms of life on earth.
With the help of Thomasine Giesecke, artist and Pascale Chau Huu, videast, the children will draw, cut and animate their figures to create a whimsical film which will be astonishing, for sure !!
Thomasine Giesecke is an artist living in Paris. She also works as an educational teacher at the Musée D´Orsay and the Louvre Museum. She has come to Iceland two years in a row and taught students in Árnes County and here in the museum, for example stop-motion and now she is back and this time she is also showing her works Volvox and Mineral is alive which she made in collaboration with other artists and scientists.

Kintsugi Ceramics (repair) workshop.
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with for example bronze and silver. The workshop is led by Clementine Nuttall who lives in Japan and has been exploring the Kintsugi method for a while. Clementine will introduce participants to the Kintsugi method and provide participants with an opportunity to bring their broken or chipped ceramics and learn the Japanese technique of Kintsugi. This collaborative experience aims to foster a sense of connection between the community and the artistic exploration, creating a shared narrative.
The repaired ceramics from the community symbolize the collective resilience and beauty that can emerge from life’s fractures.
Clementine Nuttall is a British artist that resides in Japan. She will be in residency in Hveragerði in July working on her project titled Faultlines that seeks to explore the intersection between the Japanese art of mending ceramics with gold, known as kintsugi, and the dynamic geological landscape of Iceland. Much like her adopted home in Japan, Iceland is situated in an area of significant seismic activity that outsider perspectives perceive as encapsulating both risk and beauty.
The residency location at Hveragerði is situated on the tectonic plate lines between the North American and Eurasian plates — a transitional space. The project aims to draw parallels between the lines of kintsugi and the lines of tectonic plates, highlighting the connection between the process of damage and the beauty of the golden repair, and the flourishing nature that bursts from the region in Summertime. In essence, ‘Faultlines’ will serve as a celebration and meditation on spirituality and human connections to nature, focusing on Icelandic hot spring culture as a distinctive expression of life lived in the faultlines.
The workshop is for free and is for ages 13+.

Textile workshop
October – November 2022
Teacher: Ásta Guðmundsdóttir
In the textile workshop the artist Ásta Guðmundsdóttir draws attention to the value of raw materials, seeing new possibilities in the “old” and “useless” by reusing garments that are considered useless and making them into a new garment or even a work of art. The children come to school with clothes that can be reused and/or changed. The idea for the workshop arises from the consumer trend in which we all have some part and help children to reuse and create beautiful and fun things. Sew a new garment out of the “old one”, create a beautiful work of art on the hole in the sock, make a sweater out of two worn ones, give a new life to your favorite garment that has become old and worn, and so on. The possibilities are endless.

Workshop threads from the museum into the countryside.
With this project, the LÁ Art Museum will run workshops and courses for schools in the county of Árnessýsla. This time we will work with six artists from different backgrounds, artists, actors, directors, authors, electronic musicians and experimental artists.
The aim of the project is to work with primary school students in Árnessýsla schools where the children get to experience the museum and museum life in a lively way led by courses led by artists, many living in Árnessýsla. The LÁ Art Museum in collaboration with the artists will run a series of courses where the art museum offers both a visit to the museum itself and also the artists will travel between schools and will be offered these 3 workshops which are all interdisciplinary.
The first workshop has been written by a writer, philosopher and artist, where the starting point is to create their own doll, but with it we will also work on ideas about emotions, listening, relationships with others, animals and nature and relationships with ourselves.
The second workshop is electronic music and the creation of a sound world where an artist works with an electronic musician and they will teach how to listen to the sounds around us, record them and use them in the creation of a sound world and even the beginning of a piece of music.
The third workshop is even more connected to the collection of the LÁ Art Museum, where an actor and director work with an artist to create a story and a play with works from the museum’s collection in the foreground.
We believe that all these workshops will leave seeds that can grow and become something bigger in the future.
Please contact us and your participation in the project Smiðjuþræðir by e-mail: listasafn@listasafnarnesinga.is
Alda Rose Cartwright is the project leader.
Please note that there are only 10 schools we can include in this project this fall.
