LÁ Art Museum is situated in Hveragerdi, South Iceland. It is an art museum that preserves a small collection of modern and contemporary art mainly Icelandic artists but also some work by international artists.  Every year the museum puts up a variation of exhibitions.  In connection with the exhibitions there are educational program on offer such as workshops, guided tours and artist’s talks. The bright seating area offers visitors the chance to relax in a peaceful setting.  The Museum also houses a small cafe and the children’s corner gives the museum’s younger visitors a chance to enjoy themselves.

History of the museum

LÁ Art Museum is owned by the eight municipalities in Árnes County in South-Iceland.  It is accredited by the Museum Council of Iceland. The museum was awarded the Icelandic Museum Prize in 2018.

The foundation for the museum was laid in 1963 when a large donation from Mrs. Bjarnveig Bjarnadottir and her two sons, Bjarni Markus Johannesson and Loftur Johannesson of paintings by respectable artists was donated to the Árnes County and is therefore the oldest art museum outside the capital that is open to the public. Today the collection of the museum consists of over 500 artworks of various kinds and backgrounds.

The museum emphasizes on creating an increased interest, awareness, knowledge and understanding of visual arts for the people of Árnes County and their guests through exhibitions, educational programs, talks, discussions and other suitable events.
